Aldermen are backing plans for a $57 million, 14-story facility for older residents.

Barrington developer Nick Mitchell plans to build the 300-unit building at 1050 Oakton St. adjacent to a restaurant he owns.

The 4-2 vote during a Community Development Committee meeting Monday paves the way for a City Council vote in April, Des Plaines officials said. The 134-foot building exceeds Des Plaines’ height restrictions by 89 feet and was opposed in July by the Plan Commission.

Mitchell said the independent living facility for residents 55 and older will have an auditorium, a pool and worship space.

“It brings in revenue, helps improve the beauty of the Oakton corridor and would not impact its neighbors,” said community activist Vince Powers, a 30-year Des Plaines resident.

“My objection is its height,” said Mike Mickelsen. “I live directly to the east and probably won’t see the sun until 11 a.m.”

During a six-hour meeting, Ald. Carla Brookman, who along with Ald. Patricia Beauvais opposed the plan, said the “300 percent height variation is inappropriate along Oakton Avenue.”
