The Cedar Lake Ensemble, a 1 1/2-year-old group, is a last-minute addition to the downtown dance schedule and will make its Chicago debut April 9 and 10 at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre, 24 W. Randolph St.
The 19-member troupe, founded by artistic director L. Jen Ballard and Nancy Walton Laurie, merges classical and contemporary ballet with production values that have been compared to those of Cirque du Soleil. Founded in September 2002, the company is an anomaly in the dance scene as a for-profit venture, one that boasts employment and full benefits year-round for ensemble members. Laurie is a member of the family of Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
The run will include five pieces by Benoit Swan-Pouffer, Jamar Roberts and Ballard. For tickets, call 312-902-1400.
