Glenbard North senior Joe Gomez set a state wrestling record with 192 career wins, erasing Sean Bormet (1985-89) of Providence’s 184 from the record book. Gomez, who won the Class AA 130-pound title and helped his team to third place in the team championships, finished with a 192-5 mark (and two state titles) after going 50-0 this season. Which does he remember most, the victories or the losses? “The losses, of course,” said Gomez. “The 192 wins just flash by, but the five losses hang in your mind forever.” The biggest loss came as a junior when eventual state champion Cassio Pero of Mt. Carmel defeated him 3-2 in the 119-pound state semifinals. “I should have had more takedowns,” he said. “That match haunts me.”
