For dogs who own their owners, “Throw Me a Bone” (Simon & Schuster, $19.95) is barking up the right tree. This canine cookbook, penned by Welsh springer spaniel Cooper Gillespie, should satisfy the appetite of the most finicky dogs and their doting parents–er, human companions.

OK, so the real byline belongs to Susan Orlean, author of “The Orchid Thief.” (Cooper is her pup.) But the recipes are no joke. Cookbook author Sally Sampson developed 50 pooch-worthy recipes that were approved by dog trainer Sally Alldredge–not to mention a panel of tail-waggin’ tasters. Appetizers, entrees, snacks and desserts with names like grrranola, doggone best pizza and paw-mesan tail twisters are appealing enough, but Cami Johnson’s black-and-white photos of Cooper and his pals are so adorable, they’re bound to make the most stoic dog owner melt into submission, head for the kitchen and start whipping up a feast for Rover.
