Marquette junior point guard Travis Diener is listed as day-to-day after suffering whiplash in the Golden Eagles’ 84-76 loss Tuesday night at Charlotte.
Diener, who did not practice Wednesday, was re-evaluated and treated by the Marquette medical staff. His status for the week’s remaining practices and Saturday’s game against DePaul has not yet been determined.
Still, coach Tom Crean was just glad Diener is up and about.
“All things considered, and having had a chance to see on tape the forceful nature of the collision, we are extremely thankful that Travis is going to be OK,” Crean said.
Diener, who’s averaging a team-best 17.5 points per game, was injured with 13 minutes 3 seconds left in the game when he caught 49ers center Calvin Clemmons, 6 feet 8 inches and 250 pounds, in the air. Clemmons landed on the back of Diener’s neck with both legs.

Gordon surgery
Connecticut scoring leader Ben Gordon, averaging 18 points a game, had surgery on his broken nose and was fitted for a special mask. He missed practice and it’s not clear whether he will be available for the Huskies’ game against Providence on Saturday.
Cotton practices
Brandon Cotton practiced with Detroit Mercy for the first time since transferring from Michigan State. The freshman point guard, who started taking classes last week, will not be able to play until final examinations are completed from the 2004 fall semester.
