The turkeys are back! Slow Food USA, in collaboration with the Chicago chapter, will offer heritage turkeys for this year’s Thanksgiving feasts.

Heritage turkeys are older varieties that are in danger of extinction; finding an economic outlet encourages the breeds’ future.

In 2003, 150 Bourbon Red turkeys will be available through Caveny Farm in Monticello, Ill. The birds are pre-sold and sustainably raised outdoors in pastures.

Cost is $3.50 per pound plus $6 delivery to downtown Chicago. A $20 non-refundable deposit is required toward the purchase price. Four sizes are available: 14-18 pounds, 18-22 pounds, 22-24 pounds, or more than 24 pounds.

Dressed and frozen turkeys will be available for pick-up on Nov. 25 at Belloc Lowndes Fine Art, 215 W. Huron St. Final payment for the balance due, which will be determined by the weight of the turkey, will be accepted at the pick-up site.
