Students at York Community High School in Elmhurst will team up with the Conservation Foundation, the Salt Creek Watershed Network and other area environmental groups in a project designed to raise awareness of water-quality issues.

The program, which initially will focus on monitoring water quality along Salt Creek in Elmhurst, is being paid for by a $10,000 grant the network received from DuPage Community Foundation.

The award will be used to hire a part-time program administrator and buy equipment for students as part of classroom activities.

Oak Brook resident and network board member Tom Richardson will oversee the project, which also will include an Elmhurst storm drain stenciling program. According to organizers, participating environmental groups hope to expand the activities to other municipalities in the Salt Creek watershed.
