Many November magazines are surprisingly skimpy on the topic of the moment for most cooks: Thanksgiving!
But thankfully, not all. Here are tips culled from some of our favorite holiday issues:
– One of several ideas from Bon Appetit for quickly jazzing up pumpkin pie: Sprinkle crushed amaretti cookies (Italian macaroons) on top before baking. We also loved Dorie Greenspan’s “Turkey School” primer, with a four-page, illustrated foldout. And the 132 holiday recipes should help with the menu. But hurry: The November issue is on newsstands only until Tuesday.
– Cooking Light’s ample assortment of recipes includes this weighty tidbit: A single slice of pumpkin pie has “half the calories and more fiber and calcium than pecan (pie), and has nearly two-thirds your daily vitamin A needs.”
– For Thanksgiving Day potlucks, Martha Stewart Living suggests that hosts ask cook-contributors to bring multiple copies of recipes to accompany the dish they’re bringing. It’s another way to share the feast, and the memories that attend it. (Maybe the culinary-challenged folks who always get asked to bring the soda can supply coupons.)
