A developer is seeking approval to renovate a 19th Century house for office or retail use in a proposed strip mall at Illinois Highway 31 and Illinois Highway 72.

The Planning and Zoning Commission is expected to hear the amended proposal by Heid-ner Property Management of Glendale Heights on May 21.

The commission last month rejected Heidner’s previous proposal because it included plans to demolish the two-story brick house, which dates to 1848.

“We want to see the house preserved,” said Rogers Susanke, chairman of the commission. “It’s one of the three oldest homes in the village.”

Marge Edwards of Dundee Township Historical Society attended last month’s commission meeting and delivered a presentation about the house, which was purchased in 1868 by a farmer.

Commissioners will hear the amended proposal, which would preserve the house and build a one-story, 7,000-square-foot strip mall with 25 parking spaces.
