Edward Dennis, 52, who was hired last week to be West Dundee’s new police chief, will start the job April 15.

Dennis will replace Richard Lovett, who retired in November after 28 years. Dennis’ law enforcement career began in Waukegan more than 30 years ago, and he was police chief in Joplin, Mo., the past four years.

Capt. Dave Sawyer has been interim chief during the six-month search to fill the $87,000-a-year post.

Dennis, a native of Waukegan, was a police officer there for 15 years and a lieutenant before he was appointed chief of police in Glendale Heights in 1995. He was chief for three years before taking the job in Joplin.
