MORNING

Start your day of movie madness with a bowl of Lucky Charms, while watching the new edition of Preston Sturges’ masterpiece “Sullivan’s Travels” on DVD (Criterion Collection, $39.95). While this comedy classic starring Veronica Lake and Joel McCrea is also available on VHS, the new DVD transfer offers a commentary track and documentary about Sturges’ rise and fall in Hollywood.

AFTERNOON

Continuing the movie theme, visit some of Chicago’s most famous filming locations. While downtown, check out Union Station (210 S. Canal St.), site of the famous baby carriage shootout scene in “The Untouchables.” Take a walk over to Daley Plaza, which movie cops decimated the lower floor of in 1980’s “The Blues Brothers.”

For more recent movie memories, why not have lunch (weekends only) in Old Town at Twin Anchors Restaurant and Tavern (1655 N. Sedgwick St., 312-266-1616). This charming neighborhood bar, known for its pork baby back ribs, was home to the David Duchovny and Minnie Driver flick “Return to Me.” Although it is called O’Reilly’s in the film, there are plenty of movie photographs to bask in, and fans of the “The X-Files” can eat in a room that dreamy Duchovny acted in before the dismal “Evolution.”

EVENING

Next, catch the 7:50 p.m. show of Alejandro Amenabar’s stylistic scarefest “The Others” at the Village Theatre (1548 N. Clark St., 312-642-2403). Starring Nicole Kidman, this simple, elegant ghost story proposes an intellectual look at the paranormal and a sharp contrast to . . . The Original Mother’s (26 W. Division St.), where the Rob Lowe and Demi Moore sex comedy “About Last Night” was filmed. After catching a nightcap in the basement bar, walk across the street to Video Shmideo (51 W. Division St.) to rent a movie for the next day. Try “High Fidelity,” “The Fugitive” or “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” — all of which have Chicago ties.
