Don’t know what to do with that old radio?

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County is teaming up with Motorola and United Recycling Industries Inc. to sponsor a one-day event when broken, outdated or unwanted household electronics will be collected for recycling.

“If someone has been hanging on to an old computer or television, this is a great time to dispose of it,” said Peter Adrian, SWALCO’s recycling coordinator. “You can do yourself, the environment and the future a favor by dropping off electronics at this event.”

The purpose of the event is to recycle as much as possible to save space in local landfills.

Last year’s event collected 8,000 pounds of consumer electronics, 13,000 pounds of office equipment, 17,000 pounds of computer equipment and 39,000 pounds of computer monitors and television sets.

The collection will run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Motorola’s Libertyville facility, 600 N. Illinois Highway 45. It is free for Lake County residents.

United Recycling Industries Inc., founded in 1952, has been recycling computers since the 1980s. It will recycle as much material as possible from the collected items and handle any hazardous metals or toxic materials under guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Items that will not be accepted for collection include microwaves, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, irons, lamps and other electrical fixtures, and large appliances such as stoves, refrigerators and freezers. Residents should contact their local waste hauler for information on disposing those items.
