Trustee Norm Osth, who lives in the Hills of West Dundee subdivision, told fellow board members that a neighborhood Rottweiler could be harmful, although the dog is in a fenced yard.
Osth recounted that while he walking on a sidewalk in the subdivision, “This very large Rottweiler came running at me. The dog stopped just at the edge of the fenced area.”
Under the village’s animal control ordinance, a dog cannot be allowed to chase, run after or jump at any vehicle or pedestrian on public thoroughfares or snap, growl, snarl or otherwise threaten individuals. The owners of animals found in violation of the ordinance could be fined up to $500.
Under the new rule, the village may seek a court order requiring a dog to be muzzled, kept out of the village or destroyed.
Police Chief Richard Lovett noted there has not been an official complaint filed against the Rottweiler’s owner, but he added that the revised ordinance “gives the prosecutor just another way to ask the judge to impose another sanction than just a fine.”
