Despite Wednesday’s inclement weather, a classic pitchers duel emerged in the Central Suburban South softball matchup between New Trier and Niles West.
In a game which featured only three hits, New Trier ace Mandy Kohl prevailed to lift the third-ranked Trevians (5-0, 1-0) to a 1-0 victory. Kohl threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and one walk to improve to 3-0.
Lynn Hohs allowed only two hits but took the loss when New Trier capitalized on a leadoff walk in the third inning to score the lone run of the game. Becky Salm walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Kelsey McKinnon, who was inserted as a pinch runner, stole third and scored on the catcher’s wild throw.
“Due to the conditions I think both pitchers pitched well,” New Trier coach Trish Loftus said. “Fortunately we capitalized on the walk. It was a pitchers game and we just had to execute.”
