Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

One of the most agreeable moments for those bitten by the wine bug comes occasionally when, at the end of a tasting, prices are revealed and the wine you have lost your heart to turns out to be a bargain. I had tasted eight recently released merlots and was most pleased by this Salmon Harbor, a name and a wine previously unknown to me.

There’s nothing heavy-handed here. The wine was supple and full of fresh fruit flavors, led by cherry. It was well balanced, too, with no over-aggressive tannins. I favored it over several well-known merlots in the $15-$20 range. When I discovered the price was only $9, it immediately became a wine of the week choice. So I’ll be able to drink Salmon Harbor merlot with anything from lamb stew to an open-faced grilled cheese sandwich and enjoy every bargain sip.
