The on-going search for worthy wines that also represent good value takes us to the southern Rhone Valley of France. We’re east of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and north of Avignon in the Cotes-du-Ventoux region at the foot of Mt. Ventoux, a setting painted often by Paul Cezanne.
The amiable sommelier pours us this local red from the well-known shipper Delas Freres. We taste. We smile. The dominant fruit flavor is strawberry and the wine is light and charming, just right for quaffing or to accompany cold cuts, an omelet or cheese at lunch or grilled chicken in the evening. It tastes even better when we discover the price back home in Chicago is only $7.50.
