Former U.S. Rep. John Porter, who spent more than two decades representing residents of the northern suburbs in Congress, will now be representing clients at one of the more prestigious law firms in Washington.
“I am very pleased to be joining a firm with such an outstanding reputation,” said Porter, who will be a partner in the international law firm of Hogan & Hartson LLP.
“The firm’s pre-eminent practices in health care and education will provide the opportunity for me to continue to focus on issues with which I was very involved during my 21 years in Congress,” Porter said.
Porter, who decided not to seek re-election to a 12th term in Congress, most recently served as a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, vice chairman of the Foreign Operations Subcommittee and chairman of the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Subcommittee.
“His experience working on a wide range of national legislative issues and international concerns will be of great value to our clients,” said Warren Gorrell, chairman of Hogan & Hartson, which is the largest law firm based in Washington.
Porter plans to focus on health, education and legislative issues at the 800-member firm. He will be one of four former congressmen at the firm, including Robert Michel, a 38-year representative from Illinois’ 18th Congressional District.
Porter practiced law in Evanston from 1963 to 1980 after graduating from the University of Michigan Law School.
He served in the Illinois General Assembly for eight years before winning election to Congress.
