Buffalo Grove sophomore Katie Allard, in only her third varsity start, displayed a veteran’s ability to extricate herself from some serious hot water.
In the third inning of Friday’s softball game, Allard walked three batters and allowed Rolling Meadows’ lone run to cross the plate on a wild pitch. But she soon collected herself to retire the next 12 batters, completing a 2-1 no-hit victory over Rolling Meadows in the Mid-Suburban East.
“Allard had better command of her pitches after that one inning,” Buffalo Grove coach Laura Stock said. “It was the best game she’s pitched this season, and it was important for the conference win.”
No. 5 Buffalo Grove (8-1, 2-0) trailed 1-0 until the sixth inning, when the Bison bats came alive with a barrage of singles. Kate Stake, who was 2 for 3 on the day, singled in Lindsey Hamma to tie the game 1-1. Then Sami Albert, who was robbed earlier in the game on a diving catch by second baseman Tina Radlein, finally poked one through the middle to score Erin Bravo for the game-winner.
“Albert had a great hit,” Stock said. “Rolling Meadows really played good defense today.”
