John Humphrey Drive will be reduced to one lane in each direction south of 143rd Street for five weeks to add full signals to the intersection.
Similar work is planned at 82nd Avenue and Clearview Drive on 143rd Street. The work is part of the 143rd Street widening project, which is expected to be completed in November, said Lisa Taccola, an engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The project, estimated to cost up to $15 million, will expand 143rd Street from two lanes to five lanes between La Grange Road and Harlem Avenue.
A painted median will serve as a turning lane. Instead of ditches along the sides of the road, fully improved curbs, gutters and stormwater sewers will be constructed.
The lane closure on John Humphrey Drive began Monday.
