While wandering the Web, check out www.world2market.com. Very cool: from what it sells–beautiful handcrafted furniture and gifts made by international artisans–to its raison d’etre–to use e–commerce to help alleviate world poverty. Each purchase at World2Market provides financial support for the artisan and the humanitarian organization responsible for bringing the product to market, both of which are detailed for users.
A few samples: a pair of woven bamboo trays from the Ifugao and Bontoc craftspeople in the Philippines ($79), a hand-hammered copper bowl made by a Mexican artisan ($320) and a mahogany and leather rocking chair made in a family-owned factory in Costa Rica ($375). The site made its debut this month.
