A 10-cent fare hike for Pace riders next year was approved Wednesday by the suburban bus agency’s board.

Little opposition to the fare hike was voiced during eight hearings held in recent weeks by Pace throughout the six-county area it serves, said Pace spokesman Blaine Krage.

The fare increase was made to meet a revenue performance mark set by the Regional Transportation Authority for Pace next year.

Once the RTA gives its approval next month, the standard fare will rise to $1.25 from $1.15.

Riders who buy monthly passes, or transfer from Chicago Transit Authority routes to Pace, will not be affected. It is the first increase for Pace since 1994, when fares were raised from $1.10.

The board also approved a $118.5 million operating budget for Pace next year, along with a $43.4 million capital improvements program.

In other action, the board voted to combine west suburban Route No. 710 (Gary Avenue in Carol Stream), which has been underused, with Route No. 709 (Carol Stream/North Wheaton). The move is expected to save Pace about $25,000 annually.
