Tim Couch said something very significant after the Browns’ exhibition opener Monday night against Dallas: “I’ve never been a real good practice player. I practice hard, but I don’t always throw the ball well.” Truth is, Couch never had a practice that quite matched his stunning 11-of-17 passing performance Monday night. There had been times when he looked good, but never so confident, so polished. “When the camera lights come on, things get more exciting,” he said. Browns owner Al Lerner, team President Carmen Policy and General Manager Dwight Clark–who committed $48 million to Couch, including a $12 million bonus–must be wearing huge smiles. It was a relief for them to see the investment look so promising, especially after Couch’s early ragged practices.
