Plans to develop the township’s first park were delayed this week when the Orland Township Board rejected all construction bids because they exceeded the budget for the project.

The township received a state grant of $48,000 for the park and, through a local pancake breakfast fundraiser, has added $3,000 to the budget for the project, said Orland Township Trustee Shirley Fazio.

Planners expected that roughly half of the budget would go toward equipment purchases and the other half toward the installation cost. But at a Township Board meeting this week, the installation bids from contractors ranged from $35,000 to $56,000, said Fazio.

Playground equipment and two baseball back stops are planned to be erected on township land south of 143rd Street between Wolf Road and Will-Cook Road to serve residents of the Pinewood East and Pinewood West subdivisions.

Fazio said the project likely will be rebid.
