The Pace board of directors agreed Wednesday to continue a subsidy agreement with the Village of Schaumburg for Route 602.

The village, which pays for half of the route’s operation, last month agreed to continue the arrangement for at least another six months at a cost of about $19,200.

Village officials say their cost, about $1,600 a month, is worth it, even though the route averages about 25 riders a day.

In other action, the suburban bus service approved a free weekend of rides and a $13 price reduction for joint Pace-Chicago Transit Authority monthly fare cards.

The monthly passes will be reduced to $75 from $88 to make Pace’s price consistent with a September price cut by the CTA. The free rides Dec. 5 and 6 aim to promote greater use of Pace services on weekends.

The board approved a $114.1 million operating budget and a $52.1 million capital budget for 1999.

Board members also viewed a prototype of the new, low-floor wheelchair-accessible bus Pace is ordering from North American Bus Industries. Pace is buying 51 of the new buses, which will be in service in 1999, at a cost of $240,000 each.
