Legislation sponsored by state Rep. Mark Beaubien (R-Barrington Hills) to give county officials more power to shut down adult-entertainment ventures has been signed into law by Gov. Jim Edgar.

Beaubien said he sponsored House Bill 2557 during the General Assembly’s spring session in response to concerns by residents in his 52nd House District who protested the opening of a topless nightclub in unincorporated Mundelein last December.

“I’ve had a lot of people ask me to do something about the problem and I’m glad my efforts succeeded,” Beaubien said.

The club in Mundelein was shut down eventually because of an ownership dispute that resulted in eviction.

Beaubien said the new legislation gives county boards more provisions to seek the gradual elimination of adult-entertainment businesses that are deemed incompatible with the character of the districts in which they are located.
