Pace officials took the first step Thursday evening to seek a new executive director to replace Joseph DiJohn, who retires in four months.

Search committee members, meeting at Pace’s Arlington Heights headquarters, agreed they want someone who, preferably, has an advanced degree in public or business administration, perhaps with related skills in planning or capital development.

They also agreed the candidate should have good communications skills, whether dealing with state legislators, the Regional Transportation Authority, bus drivers or Pace customers. Suburban transportation experience is preferable.

“How does he fit into our vision, the dynamism that Pace faces?” said board Chairwoman Florence Boone.

“If someone comes in here and has not had some experience with suburban expectations, I think it’s going to be very hard for them,” Boone said.
