It wasn’t the best way to start the week for the 10th-ranked Joliet boy’s soccer team.
The Steelmen (16-3-1), who earned their ranking after shutouts of Andrew and Lincoln-Way last week, were in turn shut out Monday 2-0 at Homewood-Flossmoor (15-4).
“Seeing them ranked in the papers was definitely extra incentive for us,” said H-F coach Dennis Fink, whose team lost to Joliet 2-1 earlier in the season.
Billy Geller volleyed home Andy McMahan’s cross for the Vikings’ first goal, and Seth Heilicser put them up 2-0 with his second-half tally. Erik Carlson turned aside six shots for his 11th shutout.
Joliet had lost only twice, both times to Lincoln-Way.
Mid-Suburban League playoffs: Buffalo Grove coach John Erfort notched his 200th career victory as the Bison (11-9-1) defeated Schaumburg (8-9-3) 2-1 in the fifth place game.
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Erfort, who started the Buffalo Grove program 22 years ago. “There’s been countless numbers of players here who’ve contributed to this.”
Andy Lyons and Jordan Smith each contributed a goal Monday.
In the third-place game, No. 3 Fremd (16-2-3) shut out Rolling Meadows 3-0 behind goals by Joe DeSalvo, John Tomiano and Chris Lonteen. Hersey and Conant play for the conference title Tuesday.
