Somewhere, the late Roger Maris is smiling. He always does this time of year. That’s because his home run record probably will stand for another season, and those who thought they had a chance to break it–well, they discovered a little of what it was like to be Roger Maris in 1961. Sixty-one homers. . . . Consider that the last player with at least 55 homers in a season other than Maris was Hank Greenberg (58), and that was in 1938. There is something about 60 homers, both a physical and psychological wall that keeps even the biggest hitters away. As for Maris’ record, it lives on. And think about this–Roger Maris now has held the home run record (going on 36 years) longer than Babe Ruth did (34 years). That may be the ultimate testimony to what Maris did in 1961.
