Ryne Sandberg, whose swollen left hand was examined by doctors Sunday and Monday, will miss at least another day or two. According to manager Jim Riggleman, Sandberg’s tendinitis isn’t considered serious to place him on the disabled list.

“Right now, we’re looking at a couple of days (out of the lineup),” Riggleman said.

Todd Haney started for Sandberg in Monday’s game against the Atlanta Braves. Bret Barberie is expected to start Tuesday at second base.

Sandberg has missed eight of the Cubs’ 51 games because of injury. He earlier was sidelined because of an inner-ear infection.

Promo power: The pregame laughter from the Cubs’ players lounge came during a screening of Fox-TV’s commercial spots featuring Mark Grace, as well as Sandberg, Sammy Sosa and Terry Adams.

Sosa’s performance received the most compliments–and the most laughs.

Lineup changes: Jose Hernandez replaced Rey Sanchez at shortstop Monday. The reason was simple: Sanchez is a career .045 hitter (1 for 22) against Braves starter Tom Glavine.

Guzman update: Jose Guzman, who earlier said he was bound for Triple-A Iowa, was with the Cubs Monday and will travel with the team later this week for an exhibition game against the Southern League All-Stars. Guzman is expected to start for the Cubs Thursday night at Orlando.

“It will be a good test for him,” Riggleman said.

Guzman remains on the disabled list as he tries to improve his arm strength.
