Sharon Schoo, who attained notoriety during the 1992 Christmas season when she and her husband left their two daughters home alone while they vacationed in Mexico, appeared in Kane County court Thursday on a charge of violating terms of her 2-year probation.

But according to Schoo’s attorney, Shari Bertane, the charges were filed after Schoo’s probation had expired and should be thrown out.

Prosecutors say Schoo did not notify officials of an address change within the required 48 hours. Schoo told the probation office on April 17, about two weeks after moving into North Aurora.

She also is alleged to have missed her final scheduled counseling appointment. If Circuit Judge Barry Puklin determines she did violate terms of probation, Schoo could receive additional probation or jail time.

But Bertane said the complaint was not filed until April 19, one day after Schoo’s probation was due to end.

Schoo’s estranged husband, David, has successfully completed a similar court-ordered probation. The Schoos have surrendered custody of the children.

Puklin is scheduled to rule July 10 on a motion to dismiss the charges.
