Expecting a large-and perhaps vocal-turnout for Monday’s public hearing on potential landfill locations in the county’s western townships, the County Board-appointed public siting advisory committee has moved the meeting to Elgin Community College.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the college’s Visual and Performing Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive. It originally had been scheduled at the county’s government center in Geneva, but committee co-chairman Ed Wilmes said the larger arena would better enhance public participation.
Last month, the advisory committee recommended seven potential locations for a 21st Century landfill that would ultimately replace two aging county dumps.
The sites, four located in Kaneville Township, plus one each in Burlington, Plato and Virgil Townships, have drawn sharp criticism from both political leaders and residents in the sparsely-populated rural areas.
