A healthy baby boy apparently was abandoned Sunday by an unidentified woman in the emergency ward at Delnor Community Hospital.
After being examined by physicians, the child was released to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services to be placed in a temporary foster home.
Geneva Police Lt. Joe Frega said the apparent abandonment is the first such incident in the Fox Valley community. Investigators are taking nothing for granted, not even that the woman was the infant’s mother.
“We’re hoping someone out there will recognize the child or this woman and call in with new information,” Frega said.
Police on Monday released a sketch of the woman, described as being in her mid-to-late 20s, about 5 feet 5 inches tall, with dark, short hair.
According to hospital and police statements, the woman came to the emergency room at about 9:15 a.m. carrying the baby, who was wrapped in a blanket, inside an infant car seat.
The woman placed the car seat on a chair, set down a bag of clothing, diapers and bottles, then asked someone in the waiting room to watch the child while she went back outside to park her car. But the woman never returned.
