Absentee voting in Kane and DeKalb Counties has begun in advance of a nearly $800,000 emergency referendum in Kaneland School District 302 that would repair and reopen the district’s condemned high school gymnasium.

A Kane County judge last month agreed to the school district’s request to open polling places in the school district on June 20 rather than wait for the fall general election.

School officials said if the initiative were approved in June, repairs could be completed before the winter sports season begins, but they said that waiting until Nov. 7 to have a vote would force the gym to remain shut at least through the end of the 1995-96 school term, if the measure were approved.

Voters in both counties have until June 15 to return mailed ballots to their respective county clerk’s offices. In-person balloting is available during normal business hours through June 19 in both counties, but only at the clerk’s offices.

Election officials said the unusual referendum affects about 6,200 voters in 14 Kane County precincts, 238 voters in three precincts in DeKalb, and one registered voter in Aurora. Sava said that person will be allowed to vote in Kane County.
