Town and Country Library officials are likely to wait until at least March to make a second effort at funding construction of a new building.

So, the board is looking outside the library’s bulging walls to store existing materials and make room for newer books and audio tapes at the 3,400-square-foot facility inside the American Legion Hall.

Last month, residents in the mostly rural central Kane County district turned thumbs down on a $2.95 million bond issue to build and equip a 16,000-square-foot building near Village Hall. The initiative failed by just over 100 votes out of about 1,650 cast.

Because Kaneland School District 302 is expected to twice seek money from many of the same voters in the coming months, including an expected June emergency referendum to fund repair of the high school gym that has been closed since February because of structural damage, library officials have put off their own plans.

“There is hesitancy to go in November largely because of the difficulties the school is having,” said Leonard Stidley, library board president. “Especially with them going for a special one in June, I think the tenor is we will maybe wait for March.”

A hearing is set for May 17 in Kane County Circuit Court seeking an emergency referendum, school district attorney Bob Trevarthen said. If Judge Peter Grometer rules in the school’s favor, an election could be held within 30 days.

Twice, referendums seeking a 60-cent increase in the school district’s general operating funds have been overwhelmingly defeated, prompting officials to consider an undetermined smaller increase in the Nov. 7 election.

Stidley said the library board has been tentatively offered storage space by an unnamed benefactor at no cost to the district.

More than 10 times as many library cards are in circulation today than were issued in 1988.
