The McHenry County Board Tuesday approved a new contract for the sheriff’s police and correctional officers that grants pay raises ranging from 3.5 percent to 12.3 percent.

The raises for the 72 patrol officers, police sergeants and lieutenants and the 88 correctional officers are retroactive to Dec. 1, 1993, when the old contract expired.

The police raises call for a 3.5 percent retroactive pay raise and subsequent raises of 5 percent in both the second and third years. The new raises bring the starting pay to $23,112 a year and the top pay after 20 years to $37,000.

The correctional contract calls for 12.3 percent retroactive raises and hikes of 6.9 percent in December 1994, and 5.9 percent in December 1995.

Starting pay for correctional officers goes to $22,380, with a top pay after 20 years of $35,000.

The contract, approved by an 11-7 vote of the County Board, also creates six sergeant slots in the jail to help Supt. William Maire in the command structure. The jail formerly had informal shift leaders under Maire.
