R&B legend and Chicago native Lou Rawls reports that plans to build a cultural center for youth and senior citizens on the South Side are “on the road,” with construction to begin later this year. The center, to be named for Rawls, is slated for the site of the old Regal Theatre, at 47th Street and King Drive.
The project is to include a 1,500-seat theater, two cinemas, a roller rink, museum and library, restaurants and shops. Rawls says the project’s organizers, including Ald. Dorothy Tillman (3rd), hope the center will help rebuild the economically depressed area.
“Old folks are dying and taking their knowledge with them; the kids are growing up not knowing who they are, where they are and where they’re going. So I figure what better way to bring them together than a facility where they could get together,” Rawls says.
