A citizens group in Arlington Heights is expected to file petitions Wednesday to put a referendum proposal on the November ballot concerning the expansion of legalized gambling in the village. The proposition will ask if citizens should be given a chance to vote on whether they want more gambling, either in the form of riverboat casinos or video lottery terminals in restuarants.
Phil Crusius, coordinator of Concerned Citizens for Self-Determination, said more than 100 volunteers have collected 6,100 signatures, nearly 50 percent more than the 4,400 required to overrule the Village Board’s decision not to schedule the referendum. Arlington International Racecourse has proposed putting a casino at the park if the legislature issues additional licenses.
