Chris Harris of Glen Ellyn is a legally appointed member of the Du Page Airport Authority, according to an opinion issued by the office of Du Page County State’s Atty. James E. Ryan.
Du Page County Board Chairman Aldo Botti, an outspoken critic of operations at the West Chicago airfield, had called for Harris’ resignation and sought a legal opinion on the validity of her appointment, claiming the Illinois General Assembly-driven choice “was illegal and in violation of state statute.”
In January, Harris was appointed by legislators to fill the seat vacated by John Burgess of Geneva. Burgess was forced off the board when that Kane County community voted itself off the authority’s tax rolls.
State legislation backed by Senate President James “Pate” Philip (R-Wood Dale), a Botti foe, gave the appointment to the General Assembly because it crossed county lines.
“I’m very glad that the thing is settled,” Harris said. “I’m a contributing member to the airport authority.”
Botti could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
The opinion did, however, allow Botti one victory in affirming the County Board chairman’s right to fill a current board vacancy.
