Oak Park designers Sandy Meade and Nita Kubricht were on to something when they roped themselves a Western-theme bedroom look for a showhouse last month.
Fast-forward to the International Home Furnishings Market, which opened Thursday in High Point, N.C., there was a preponderance of four-poster beds adorned with stars, suns and even horseshoes, fabrics with the colors of sagebrush and red barns and even hat boxes upholstered in Holstein.
”People want a more casual lifestyle, and I think the trend is toward the relaxed, light look,” said David Price, of Toms-Price Furniture in Wheaton. ”I think the tremendous success of the Mission look has spread its influence.”
Another Chicago retailer commented, ”Western, western, western-that`s the trend.”
Indeed, there is a line for Edgar B (a mail-order-only company) called Mission Ranch, that was originally designed for Clint Eastwood.

”sophisticated with overstuffed comfort,” for a chaise lounge from Lineage Home Furnishings; ”captures the spirit of the old frontier,” for a server from Lexington Furniture Industries; and ”can turn an informal setting into a place for a dressy dinner,” for a drop-leaf table from Drexel Heritage.
Designers Meade and Kubricht insist they haven`t been reading any tea leaves. ”My husband just discovered the bed when he was in Santa Fe. We`d been married 18 years and we hadn`t found a bed we liked. When he saw this one, he called and said, `I found it.` ”
The bed costs $4,000 and can be ordered through the designers at 708-848-1224. Meanwhile, in High Point, retailers are hoping that they`ve found the the way to lasso consumer checkbooks that have been slammed shut for the last two years.
