The smelly goo in Lake Michigan that swamped Waukegan Harbor last week was all but gone Monday, according to harbor officials.

”Over the past week here when I looked out my window all I saw was this big black spot in the lake near the breakwall,” said Waukegan Harbor manager Mary Walker. ”It looks blue now, the wind must have moved it or shifted it or whatever it does. It still has an odor to it, though.”

A lakefront cleanup crew from Dexter Corp. discovered the slick along the edge of the company`s property south of the harbor breakwater 10 days ago.

When the flotsam was discovered, it was about the size of a puddle. But it blossomed during the week into a menacing slick three football fields long. Lake County Health Department`s aquatic biologist Mark Pfister said it was a mass of algae and decomposing matter from the bottom of the lake.
