Gary Moore

After Hours (Charisma) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2

Gary Moore`s ”Still Got the Blues” was one of 1990`s most pleasant surprises, a one-shot blues homage that sold 3 million copies worldwide. Not surprisingly, Moore`s foray has become full time, and there`s nothing wrong with that. The Memphis Horns give ”After Hours” more of a smooth, soulful flavor than its predecessor, but what`s most impressive is how well Moore`s originals stack up next to several stellar cover tunes. Moore makes the Bluesbreakers` ”Key to Love” a personal powder keg, while his laid-back singing and guitar playing dust off Duster Bennett`s ”Jumpin` at Shadows”

admirably. But Moore`s own ”Story of the Blues” is a fine chapter in itself as is the blistering, Trower-ish ”Only Fool in Town.” ”Everybody knows what the blues is all about,” sings Moore. But few of his contemporaries know it as well as this Irishman.
