Beats International
Excursion on the Version (GoBeat) (STAR)(STAR) 1/2
In reggae circles, a song that borrows rhythms and sound bites from other records is called a version. Led by Norman Cook (formerly of the Housemartins), Beats International versions all over the place as it filters a wide variety of source material through its incredibly high-tech overdubbing machine. While this approach isn`t always perfect, missteps like ”Herman”
and ”Three Foot Skank” are more than compensated for by ”Echo Chamber”
(which weds samples from Steve Miller and Third World to a healthy ska beat), ”Love Is Green,” ”Change Your Mind,” ”Ten Long Years” and a cover of Elvis Presley`s ”In the Ghetto.”
