Chana Kaufman is Conservative Jewish and Michla Schanowitz is Orthodox, but they say they`re soul mates at heart. Especially when it comes to putting together attractive gourmet gift baskets for Jewish

holidays. The two North Shore women are partners in a 2-year-old home mail-order business called Kosher Palate. They sold about 2,000 baskets for the 1992 Purim (March 19) and now are busy assembling baskets for Passover, which begins April 18.

”We have interesting products,” Kaufman said. ”Fresh-baked cookies from a New York bakery, chocolate-covered cherries and marzipan from Israel, pure maple syrup from Vermont, chocolates from France-we get our things from all over. Probably the most special is a honey apricot spread from Moon Shine Trading in California.”

All items are certified kosher. Family members and friends help assemble the baskets. ”We have a real mass production going,” Kaufman said. ”Even my 8-year-old works.”
