Rich Mullins
The World as Best as I Remember It, Vol. I (Reunion) (STAR)(STAR) 1/2
It`s hard not to like a guy who adds a little bagpipe and dulcimer to the usual guitar-bass-drums mix. And Mullins, who penned a couple of Christian rock hits for Amy Grant years ago, writes some decent lyrics as well. Soundwise, the acoustic-minded Mullins fits snugly somewhere between a couple of Bruces-Hornsby and Cockburn. Perhaps a bit too snugly. His tempos are sluggish at times, and his arrangements are occasionally tinged with the syrupy blandness that mars much Christian music these days. But when his music, lyrics and passionate voice connect, like on ”The River” and ”Step by Step,” he`s definitely worth a listen.
