Mel Reynolds, running against U.S. Rep. Gus Savage in the Democratic primary March 17, criticized the incumbent Sunday for lack of attention to low-income residents facing mortgage foreclosure in his South Side and south suburban district.
”The 2nd Congressional District has the highest federal foreclosure rate in the state of Illinois,” said Reynolds, a community activist. ”Gus Savage has failed to meet the needs of those most affected in his district.”
As a part of Reynolds` plan to combat this, any resident in his district who receives a foreclosure letter and brings it to his office would be instructed to attend a free class on the topic at Olive-Harvey College.
If they attend the class, Reynolds` office would then assist them in getting loans ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 to meet their debts, he said.
Neither Savage nor members of his staff could be reached for comment Sunday.
