The costumes for U.S. Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan are the creations of New York fashion designer Vera Wang, who specializes in bridal and custom-made gowns.

The leap from bridal to ice skating garb was not as difficult as it may sound, since Wang skated competively during her childhood. When Mary Scotvold, Kerrigan`s coach, read an article in People magazine about Wang, she contacted the designer and it turned out the two women already knew each other from the skating circuit.

So when the 22-year-old Kerrigan heads for Albertville, France, for her first Olympic appearance, she will be taking two costumes designed by Wang. For the short skating program on Feb. 19, Kerrigan will wear a chartreuse skating dress with a halter-top, sheer jersey sleeves and a bodice embroidered with lime, silver and crystal stones and pink beads. On Feb. 21, Kerrigan will wear a simple white dress with sheer white yoke and sleeves and crisscross draped bodice.

”Working with stretch fabrics needed for skating has allowed me to incorporate a certain modernity and body consciousness that I don`t often use in designing couture clothing,” says Wang.

Maybe Chicago didn`t have its team at the Super Bowl on Sunday, but a hometown clothier had its clothes there.

As they covered the battle between the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins, CBS sportscasters Greg Gumbel, Terry Bradshaw and Pat O`Brien all sported stylish clothes from Bigsby & Kruthers-including Hugo Boss sport coats, Andrew Fezza dress shirts and Hugo Boss and Talbot ties.

For Leslie Visser, Bigsby provided a long jade cashmere and wool jacket, a wool garbardine navy skirt and print silk blouse from Options by Laurel, a division of Escada. (Options will be carried in a new women`s boutique which is due to open in Bigsby`s Northbrook Court store in late February or early March, according to Carrie Brown, director of advertising for Bigsby & Kruthers.)

Chalk up the fashion victories to having friends in the right places.

”Pat O`Brien (a former Chicagoan) has been shopping with us for quite a while and he recommended us,” says Brown.
