The Genius

Words From the Genius (Cold Chillin`) (STAR)(STAR) 1/2

Although nothing on the level of E

MC2 is imparted on this New York City-based rapper`s debut, we do get some funky jazz-influenced mixes. The Genius does come up with a few verbal surprises but, for the most part, his raps cover the standard territory. There are anti-drug and crime slams (”Life of a Drug Dealer,” ”Stop the Nonsense,” ”Stay Out of Bars”), general attacks on sucker MCs (”The Genius Is Slammin`,” ”Who`s Your Rhymin` Hero?”) and one specifically aimed at 2 Live Crew (”Phony as Ya Wanna Be”).
