Thelma Houston
Throw You Down (Reprise) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
Back when reigning dance-popsters like Paula Abdul and Janet Jackson were in grammar school, Thelma Houston was one of disco`s top divas. After a lengthy absence, she`s back to try and regain some of the market share that has been monopolized by a younger generation of spandex-clad singers. Vocally, the aforementioned artists can`t touch Houston. The arrangements provided by a host of producers lack the edge you would expect from, say, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, but they are chock full of hooks nonetheless. The title track,
”Serious” and especially the frenetic ”Short Life” are rousing dance cuts.
