Black Flames
Black Flames (CBS) (STAR)(STAR) 1/2
The Black Flames are very much in the tradition of Bell Biv Devoe (if BBD can be said to have a tradition) in that they are a trio of young black males whose voices meld excellently against a funky high-tech groove. And with their choreographer getting a liner credit, it`s a good bet they can do some pretty sharp stepping, too. The songs, while lacking the high sex-quotient lyrics of BBD, feature the same pelvic-thrusting new-jack beats. Particularly invigorating are ”Watching You,” ”Dance With Me,” ”Let`s Get Loose” and ”Lies.” John ”Yah-Ya” Sykes and Nate Burgess also prove that they know their way around a ballad by crooning soulfully on ”Do Ya” and ”Stay Around.”
