Geoff McBride
Do You Still Remember Love (Arista) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
McBride`s smooth, sturdy voice and assured phrasing bring to mind such legends as Sam Cooke and the Platters` Tony Williams. Still, it takes a while for things to get rolling on his debut. The first four tunes are fairly generic examples of modern techno-pop. But the title track, which closes out Side 1, is a pleasant piece of early `60s R & B. Fortunately, the traditional approach continues for the duration of the disc. The spicy ”Just an American Girl,” jaunty Motown knockoff ”I Just Laugh” and lush ballads ”Good Old Days” and ”Doesn`t That Mean Something” take the listener on a tour of American soul music.
